Luke 14:12-24
Luke 14:12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When you make a dinner or a supper, call not your friends, nor your brethren, neither your kinsmen, nor your rich neighbors; lest they also bid you again, and a recompense be made you.
This parable was spoken to the Pharisees who had invited him
Luke 14:1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath day, that they watched him.
The basis of the parable is to teach unselfishness. And, that charity to the needed is greater than exchanging favors with those who can exchange favors with you.
Matthew 10:40 He that receives you receives me, and he that receives me receives him that sent me. 41 He that receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. 42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.
Luke 14:13 But when you make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: 14 And you shall be blessed; for they cannot recompense you: for you shall be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
Matthew 25:35 For I was an hungry, and you gave me meat: I was thirsty, and you gave me drink: I was a stranger, and you took me in: 36 Naked, and you clothed me: I was sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we you an hungry, and fed you? or thirsty, and gave you drink? 38 When saw we you a stranger, and took you in? or naked, and clothed you? 39 Or when saw we you sick, or in prison, and came unto you? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.
Resurrection of the Just
2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he has done, whether it be good or bad.
Luke 14:15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
Resurrected saints will eat food in eternity
Luke 22:14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer: 16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
Revelation 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit said unto the churches; To him that overcomes will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
Revelation 22:1 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
Luke 14:16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: 17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
He again is speaking to the Pharisees who have invited him to dine with them on the Sabbath.
All sinners have excuses as to why they continue in sin and refuse to serve God and abide by His will.
Luke 14:18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray you have me excused.
This is a poor excuse. He would have the host to believe that he has purchased a piece of property that he has never seen or examined.
Luke 14:19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray you have me excused.
This man says that he has purchased five oxen and has not seen nor tested them as their ability to plow or work.
The Danger of Excuses
Romans 1: 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Luke 14:20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
This was the worst excuse of all. He was not asked to divorce his wife, but merely leave her for a few hours. He no doubt would leave for hours at a time to work or doing other normal things that are done during the day. Besides, he could have brought her along to the dinner.
Matthew 19:29 And every one that has forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.
Luke 14:21 So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
The Master “Oikodespotes” master of the house had every right to be angry because the excuses were baseless and insulting.
Therefore, the master sends out his servants quickly because the feast was already prepared. Those who were invited represents the nation of Israel (including the Pharisees Jesus was dining with). They rejected His invitation, thus He has sent forth an invitation to the Gentiles.
John1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Acts 13: 46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing you put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.
Luke 14:22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as you have commanded, and yet there is room.
The servants went out and invited the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And yet there was room
Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
Luke 14:23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
Compel them to come in
By all by means persuade, entreat, reproof, use truth, instruct, use love, by meekness, humility, to turn men from hell and the wrath to come.
1 Timothy 2:3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that hears say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
Luke 14:24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.
