Luke 11:1-10
Luke 11:1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
Luke records Jesus praying seven times. The first is Luke 3:21
Luke 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
They experienced that when Jesus prayed, things happened. His prayers were always answered and were the source of His power. This created a desire for them to want to know how to pray with the same power and results.
Luke 11:2 And he said unto them, When you pray, say, Our Father which are in heaven, Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
The vital lessons of prayer taught by Jesus:
- How to begin.
- Whom to address.
- Whose name to revere.
- Whose will to obey.
- What to ask for.
- How to keep clear channels to God.
- How to live with our mankind.
- How to live with God.
- How to live free from sin.
“Our Father which are in heaven”
Matthew 6:9 After this manner therefore pray you: Our Father which are in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
This is the first time, that they (we) are told that God is our father.
Calling God our Father was a radical concept
John 5:17 But Jesus answered them, My Father works hitherto, and I work. 18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the Sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
Psalm 82:6 I have said, You are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
John 10:34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, You are gods?
Luke 11:3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
Exodus 16:16 This is the thing which the Lord has commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; take you every man for them which are in his tents. 17 And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less. 18 And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.
Luke 11:4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
“And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us”
As we are gods, we set the measure by which we are forgiven. God has put it into our hands.
Matthew 6:14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
“Lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil” This is a request that God keep us of the path of righteousness.
Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures: he leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Luke 11:5 And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;
This is the 13th parable in the Book of Luke
In the East, people traveled at night to avoid the heat of the sun. They would begin travel at sunset (6pm) and travel 6 hours at 3 miles an hour and travel 18 miles. Then about midnight, they would stop to rest.
Three Loaves – Jewish bread were thin biscuits that resemble stones. And, in the East it was a custom to provide water to wash a guest’s feet clean, bread, and something to drink.
Eastern Hospitality
Judges 19:19 Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your handmaid, and for the young man which is with your servants: there is no want of anything. 20 And the old man said, Peace be with you; howsoever let all your wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street. 21 So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

Luke 11:7 And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give you.
It was midnight and man within was resting with his family. It was common for families to sleep in the same room on different palates or beds.
The man with was saying I cannot be troubled by your situation.
Luke 11:8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needs.
Importunity: Aramaic – KHaTSiYP,uOT,aA
The word Importunity has two root words in English. Port and Unity.
Port with the prefix “Im” means to bring in as opposed to Export, which means to send away.
Import with the word Unity means to bring into Unity. With the word Unity meaning Oneness, the terms Importunity means to bring into oneness.
And, it is through prayer – In the name of Jesus – that we are brought into oneness with God.
Christ is saying, it is not the friendship of mankind that will provide, but rather the oneness with God that makes all things possible.
All prayers must be asked in the name of Jesus.
John 14:14 If you shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

Proverbs 16:7 When a man’s ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
James 1:4 But let patience have her perfect work, that you may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. 5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all men liberally, and upbraided not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
Importunity is often referred to as persistence. The Persistence is the consistency of being mindful and faithful to the will of God; and Not repetition.
Matthew6:7 But when you pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not you therefore like unto them: for your Father knows what things you have need of, before you ask him.
Luke 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10 For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Knock
Acts 12:16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished. 17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go show these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.
