Genesis 3:1-13
Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yes, has God said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Satan is not a snake. He is a fallen angel. He uses a serpent in the under his power.
Ezekiel 28:13 You have been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of your tabrets and of your pipes was prepared in you in the day that you was created. 14 You are the anointed cherub that covers; and I have set you so: you was upon the holy mountain of God; you have walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, till iniquity was found in you. 16 By the multitude of your merchandise they have filled the midst of you with violence, and you have sinned: therefore I will cast you as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. 17 Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty, you have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness: I will cast you to the ground, I will lay you before kings, that they may behold you.
The Serpent was cunning in his attack. He starts with a question and then mixes enough truth to a lie, the deceive Eve and Adam.
Genesis 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.
Eve states what God and then she adds unto to it. God never mentioned touching the tree.
Genesis 2:16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that thou eat thereof you shall surely die.
Genesis 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, You shall not surely die:
This is a direct lie. It is the first quoted lie in scripture.
John 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
Genesis 3:5 For God doth know that in the day you eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
Satan closes eyes and Jesus opens eyes to the truth.
2 Corinthians 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
Acts 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Adam was with her. He did not speak up. He was a weak man.
1 Timothy 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
Adam lost his dominion being a weak man.
Genesis 2:15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it
This scripture text unfolds the three temptations tools of Satan.
The lust of the eyes
The lust of the flesh
The Pride of life.
1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but he that does the will of God abides forever.
Jesus demonstrates how to successfully handle the temptations of Satan.
Lust of the Flesh
Luke 4:3 And the devil said unto him, If you be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. 4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
Lust of the Eyes
Luke 4:5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, showed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give you, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7 If you therefore will worship me, all shall be yours. 8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get you behind me, Satan: for it is written, You shall worship the You’re your God, and him only shall you serve.
Pride of Life
Luke 4:9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If you be the Son of God, cast yourself down from hence: 10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you: 11 And in their hands they shall bear you up, lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone. 12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, You shall not tempt the Lord Your God.
Genesis 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
The age of innocence was over. They lost the God-consciousness of life and fell into self-consciousness. They lost the power to do good through the obedience of God’s will and gained the ability to do evil within their own lusts. Instead of becoming like God and became unlike Him through self-will or free will.
Genesis 3:8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.
Knowing they had done wrong, they tried to hide from God.
It is impossible to hide from God.
Jeremiah 23:23 Am I a God at hand, said the Lord, and not a God afar off? 24 Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? Said the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? Said the Lord.
The Presence of God was in the Garden with them on Earth.
Genesis 3:9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where are you?
God called-out as He didn’t know where they were and what they had done.
Genesis 3:10 And he said, I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
Adam responds knowing he can’t hide from God.
Adam makes a 4-fold confession. I heard you; I was afraid because of guilt; I was naked as a result of sin; and I hid myself trying to hide my guilt.
Genesis 3:11 And he said, Who told you that you was naked? Have you eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded you that you should not eat?
God lets Adam know, I know nobody told you that your were naked, the only reason you know that you are naked is because of sin and the loss of innocence.
Genesis 2:16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat thereof you shall surely die.
This was the only command that Adam could violate.
Genesis 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
Adam blames God for the sin, because God gave him the woman who made him sin.
Proverbs 28:13 He that covers his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy.
1 Timothy 2:13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
Eating caused the first sin; just as Satan tried to temp Jesus with a stone to be turned to bread.
Philippians 3:17 Brothers, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as you have us for an ensample. 18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)
Genesis 3:13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that you have done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
Eve, like Adam, tried to shift the blame.
2 Corinthians 11:1 Would to God you could bear with me a little in my folly: and indeed bear with me. 2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
