Luke 6:37-49
Luke 6:37 Judge not, and you all shall not be judged: condemn not, and you all shall not be condemned: forgive, and you all shall be forgiven:
Matthew 7:1 Judge not, that you all be not judged. 2 For with what judgment you all judge, you all shall be judged: and with what measure you all mete, it shall be measured to you again.
Romans 2:1 Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whosoever you are that judge: for wherein you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you that judge do the same things. 2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. 3 And think you this, O man, that judge them which do such things, and do the same, that you shall escape the judgment of God?
People often project their faults or wayward way of thinking onto others. Bad people think others are bad too and will or have done the bad things they would do.
No one can escape the judgment of God, unless he or she accepts Jesus as his or her Lord and Savior.
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that hears my word, and believe on him that sent me, has everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life
Forgive to be Forgiven
Matthew 6:14 For if you all forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if you all forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you all mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
Just as forgiveness begets forgiveness, giving begets receiving. And often the inconvenience that occurs with giving is rewarding far beyond what was originally given.
Matthew 19:27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed you; what shall we have therefore? 28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That you all which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, you all also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And every one that has forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.
Warning against following blind leaders
Luke 6:39 And he spoke a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? Shall they not both fall into the ditch?
Jesus is teaching about spiritual blindness and false leaders.
Matthew 15:12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Know you that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? 13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father has not planted, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
Isaiah 56:8 The Lord God, which gathered the outcasts of Israel said, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him. 9 All you beasts of the field, come to devour, yea, all you beasts in the forest. 10 His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.
Goal of every believer
Luke 6:40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.
Jesus is saying that we do not have to be greater than Him, nor should we seek or accept to be less than Him. But rather the goal is to be like him
Warning to fault finders
Luke 6:41 And why behold you the mote that is in your brother’s eye, but perceive not the beam that is in your own eye?
Jesus is saying deal with your own faults before pointing out the faults of others.
The mote is a small splinter or dust; while a beam is a large log – a tree trunk. A person who is blinded by a tree trunk cannot really see the dust in another person’s eye.
Luke 6:42 Either how can you say to you brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in your eye, when you yourself behold not the beam that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of your own eye, and then shall you see clearly to pull out the mote that is in your brother’s eye.
This is the issue that we Christians must ask ourselves before we judge others.
Have a discerning spirit
Luke 6:43 For a good tree brings not forth corrupt fruit; neither does a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Jesus is now dealing with the motives of why people judge others while not judging themselves.
Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 You shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree brings forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree brings forth evil fruit.
Matthew 12:33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. 34 O generation of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.
Luke 6:44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
People do not seek to gather figs from thorns, nor do they look to bramble bush to gather grapes.
The fig tree is akin to the mulberry tree, but does not have thorns. Blackberries grow on bramble bushes. Bramble bushes have long, thorny, and arching stems. Grapes grow on vines and do not have thorns.
Jesus is saying why would you look to a bad tree for good fruit. The bad tree cannot provide you with good fruit.
Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
The Good Man
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
The Evil Man
1 Corinthians 6:9 Know you not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
Live in Obedience to God
Luke 6:46 And why call you me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Unless we adhere to the precepts and commands of Jesus, we are not truly Christians.
John 14:15 If you love me, keep my commandments.
Romans 6:16 Know you not, that to whom you yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants you are to whom you obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Parable of two foundations
Luke 6:47 Whosoever comes to me, and hears my sayings, and do them, I will show you to whom he is like: 48 He is like a man which built an house, and dug deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
Jesus is the foundation of our faith. He is the rock upon which the church is built.
1 Corinthians 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
Matthew 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed are you, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood has not revealed it unto you, but my Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also unto you, That you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Luke 6:49 But he that hears, and does not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that give to all men liberally, and upbraid not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
