Proverbs 8:1-36
Proverbs 8:1 Does not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice? 2 She stands in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths. 3 She cries at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
Wisdom is personified and is given a voice. She cries in High Places to rulers; she cries crossroads to common people; she cries to broad roads to those who are off the path; and she cries at the door of life. Wherever people are in life, their wisdom cries out to them, warning of both wrong and righteousness.
Proverbs 8:4 Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man. 5 O you all simple, understand wisdom: and, you all fools, be you all of an understanding heart.
Wisdom calls out to the sons of Adam. This means she cries out to the simple and foolish. Adam was simple and foolish to disobey God.
Because man, meaning male and female, are simple in understanding of obedience to God, Solomon wrote Proverbs to explain Wisdom.
Proverbs 1:1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; 2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; 3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; 4 To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
Subtlety means to give the details of something. In the case the details of wisdom,
Proverbs 8:6 Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things. 7 For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. 8 All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them. 9 They are all plain to him that understand, and right to them that find knowledge.
Wisdom speaks to us. All of her sayings are righteousness, declaring what man owes to God, neighbor, and to self. There is nothing wicked, crooked, or difficult about wisdom.
Proverbs 8:10 Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. 11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it. 12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
Wisdom is greater than riches.
Proverbs 3:13 Happy is the man that finds wisdom, and the man that gets understanding. 14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. 15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things you can desire are not to be compared unto her. 16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honor.
Solomon personally experienced the value of wisdom.
1 kings 3:5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give you. … 9 Give therefore your servant an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this your so great a people? 10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. 11 And God said unto him, Because you hast asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself long life; neither have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies; but have asked for yourself understanding to discern judgment; 12 Behold, I have done according to your words: lo, I have given you a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like you before you, neither after you shall any arise like unto you. 13 And I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches, and honor: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto you all your days.
Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. 14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.
Four things that wisdom hates are: Evil, Pride, Evil ways, and a forward mouth. Evil is itself evil. Evil ways are the actions that are evil. Sometimes good people do evil things. Good is of God and Evil is of Satan.
A person may depart from evil, yet have evil in the heart. But to hate evil requires Divine wisdom, which will eradicate evil from the heart.
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? 10 I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
Matthew 15:19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
Wisdom is counsel to man (male and female). Sound Wisdom is stability and understanding. From wisdom comes all inventions and knowledge of all the sciences known to man.
Proverbs 8:15 By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
16 By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
God through His ultimate Wisdom provides for the governance of mankind.
Psalm 75:5 Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck. 6 For promotion comes neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. 7 But God is the judge: he puts down one, and sets up another.
1 Peter 2:13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; 14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. 15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing you all may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: 16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. 17 Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. 18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
Proverbs 8:17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
Wisdom is the key to a good life. When we seek wisdom and live according to wisdom, then we will live in the love of wisdom. Wisdom says that we should seek her when we are young.
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 8:18 Riches and honor are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness. 19 My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver. 20 I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment: 21 That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
The blessings of Wisdom are: Honor; Riches; Double Riches, Righteousness; Revenue which is better than gold; Fruit which is better than silver; Substance; Treasures; and to be led in the Paths of Judgment.
Proverbs 8:22 The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. 23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. 24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: 26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
Wisdom is from the eternal past. Wisdom existed before any of God’s creations – the earth, oceans, mountains and hills, fields and plains.
Proverbs 8:27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: 28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: 29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
Wisdom is the guiding plan by which God created everything.
Psalm 104:24 O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom have you made them all: the earth is full of your riches.
Psalm 136:5 To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endures for ever.
God challenged Job in his lack of wisdom concerning what he God has done.
Job 38:1 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, 2 Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Gird up now your loins like a man; for I will demand of you, and answer you me. 4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if you have understanding. 5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if you know? or who has stretched the line upon it? 6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
It was all done by Wisdom.
Proverbs 8:30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; 31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
Wisdom says I was with God when He made the heavens and the earth.
Wisdom is a guiding principal and not a deity or a member of the Trinity.
Christ is the working arm of God when God created the heavens and the earth.
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Nevertheless, wisdom is displayed throughout all that God has made. And, all that He has made is subject to eternal wisdom.
Proverbs 8:32 Now therefore hearken unto me, O you all children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. 33 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. 34 Blessed is the man that hears me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. 35 For whoso finds me finds life, and shall obtain favor of the Lord. 36 But he that sins against me wrongs his own soul: all they that hate me love death.
Solomon writes: Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Proverbs 4:7
In wisdom, we find abundant life and the very hope of eternal life, because it is wisdom to accept Christ as our Lord and Savior.
